A Letter To President Obama: Black Mesa Trust

Dear Mr. President,

I write to inform you of a tragedy and national disgrace occurring on the Hopi and Navajo Indian Reservations in Northern Arizona.

This month, on Hopiland, we are observing the month of Kyamuya, the time of rest, reflection and renewal, the time for staying in our homes and for telling the old stories, for sharing ancient teachings and wisdom with the youth who gather round us. They look to us with eager eyes and listen with open hearts and minds. They know they are gathering the truest wealth for living a good life, for living in our Hopi Way. They gather ancient teachings for the time when they will be called to do what I am now fulfilling: the responsibility to carry forward that our ancestors have given to us. Since time immemorial, it has been so, but, this year, more than most, correction and renewal seems especially critical.

I do not tell these children what now burdens my heart, and which I am petitioning you to address. Bodies of those who told the stories and shared the wisdom before me do not rest easy. As I write these words, bulldozers and gigantic shovels are ripping through ancient graves and dislodging my ancestors from their sacred rest in Mother Earth. As I write these words, Peabody Energy Company, with the approval of your Department of the Interior, is strip mining the history and the sacred from the ancestral lands of the Hopi people. The burial grounds and cultural sites that are our living museums and cathedrals and academy of our Hopi Way are being dynamited from under our feet.

Since 1970, strip mining started on Black Mesa, the heart of Hopi land. It is expected to continue for 16 more years. In the process of strip mining for coal, untold numbers of our ancestral villages, burial sites, rock art, and religious shrines have been and are being systematically destroyed by Peabody Western Coal Co., a subsidiary of Peabody Energy. To send the coal to Los Angeles they tap into our wells and aquifers using a million gallons of pure drinking water every day to send coal slurry through pipelines. Hopi wells have dropped in some places by 80 feet, making our traditional subsistence farming impossible.

It is not easy to explain to our children about the tragedy, about the obliteration of all traces of their ancestors. It is painful and confusing to have to explain to them that their government does not hold what is sacred to them of any importance.

This is occurring on your watch and on mine. It is the shame of our generation. It is the shame of our contracts with Peabody Energy and the shame of selling our birthright. It is the shame of Hopi who were coerced into signing the 35-year leases with Peabody and federal agents who do not seem to be concerned with the damage they wreak, and it is the shame of the Department of the Interior, which is charged with looking after our long-term well-being.

Things have changed with your election. The forces that are now destroying the resting places of our ancestors no longer hold absolute sway. The way to a brighter world is before us if we choose it. The time of desecrating the graves and the spewing of poisons can and must come to an end. There are new technologies and new fuels available for a healthier world. And, where there was once only disdain and dismissal, there is now growing respect for indigenous knowledge that has sustained the peoples for millennia. It is time to create historic change and you can bring it about.

Please, Mr. President, command those who answer to you; those in the Office of Surface Mining who are entrusted to perform the studies and select options regarding strip mining on Black Mesa. Instruct them that your administration is to be guided by a wiser and wider agenda. Inform them that a new spirit of mutual respect and concern is to be the rule when dealing with Native people and that OSM and others must re-evaluate their decisions regarding Black Mesa and other indigenous lands on the basis of mutual respect and sovereignty. Instruct them to take their trust responsibility to indigenous peoples seriously, and demand they give full consideration to cultural issues (along with those of air and water, etc.) as they move forward in their findings and decisions.

And, please, Mr. President, do not let the process be blind and deaf to the culture and ancient Way of the people whose lives and future are at stake. Do not let OSM dismiss the need to preserve the land sites in which Hopi history and teaching is encoded. Do not let federal officers under your control disgrace the bones and burial places of my ancestors.

You and your Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, have the historic opportunity to bring environmental justice to the Hopi people and all indigenous people whose lands are being desecrated by mining and logging industries.

Proselytism is the practice of attempting to convert people to another opinion, usually another religion. The word proselytism is derived ultimately from the Greek language prefix 'pros' (towards) and the verb 'erchomai' (I come). Constitution

Preamble to the United States Constitution


The preamble to the United States Constitution consists of a single sentence (a preamble) which introduces the document and its purpose. The preamble neither grants any governmental powers nor inhibits any of its actions, but serves to explain the reason behind the U.S. Constitution.

You both have an impossible task as long as the Bush family patriarch holds his secrets from us all.

     I have more love and respect for you than any other President or lawyer in my life. You only broke my heart on a few key points...
Restoration of indigenous rights.
Ending covert assassinations as policy.

Freeing many more prisoners.

This is one way it happened to one kid...

When they were 3 years old it was the 200th anniversary of their Nation. The leader was a southern, born again Christian who wanted peace to come to Jerusalem and the entire world (Jimmy Carter). He recognized the need to stop using fossil fuels, and was hated for it, forever. In the election of 1980, the High Priest of LSD (Timothy Leary) ran for president against a Hollywood actor (Ronald Reagan), whose vice president happened to be the head of the CIA (G.H.W. Bush). The next president made corporations as powerful as governments... and allowed Congress to interrogate him about getting a blowjob (Bill Clinton). Then the son of the former head of CIA, (Bush II the lesser) used his governor brother and a state Supreme Court to force himself into power. Then we lost all our rights, legally.

This is the fourth Reich.

So now we have another election in a year.

Since the last two elections were obvious fakes, manipulated by Christian fanatics, how will the media possibly reinforce the numbing lies of our Dual Party apathy?

The Democrats are pretending they won't be corporate whores by projecting diversity. A woman, a black man, look at all the glorious options our rigged faux democracy has to offer! Vote for us, we will let the corporations rape you... but we can all pretend it is getting better every day!

The Republicans are pretending they aren't white power fascists by offering a Vietnam PoW, a Morman zealot and now their Reagan trump card... another actor. Vote for us, we are going to kill people so nothing changes... do it for our God, for our fallen... and if you don't care about any of that stuff vote for someone who knows how to deliver great lines!

Early Lenape society

Although a different order may have prevailed earlier, in Colonial times Lenape families (like many other Indian peoples) were (are) organized into clans based on a common female ancestor. Phratries, which were groups of two or more clans, were (are) identified by an animal sign. Three Lenape phratries emerge in the early historical record: Turtle (Unami), Turkey (Ungalachtigo), and Wolf (Munsi). These phratries are not political divisions, but rather 'flavors' of individuals common to all discrete bands of Lenape, which together make up the Lenape 'tribe' -- although the very notion of 'tribe' is misleading, suggesting a uniformity that does not exist.

Early Indian 'tribes' are perhaps better understood as language groups, rather than as 'nations.' A Lenape individual has identified primarily with his or her immediate family and friends, or village unit; then with surrounding and familiar village units; next with more distant neighbors who speak the same dialect; and ultimately, while often fitfully, with all those in the surrounding area who speak mutually comprehensible languages, including the Mohican. Those of a different language stock -- such as the Iroquois (or, in the Lenape language, the Minqua) -- were regarded as foreigners, often, as in the Iroquois' case, with animosity spanning many generations. (Interestingly, ethnicity itself seems to have mattered little to the Lenape and many other 'tribes,' as illustrated by archaeological discoveries of Munsee burials that included identifiably ethnic-Iroquois remains carefully interred along with the ethnic-Algonquian Munsee ones. The two groups were bitter enemies since before recorded history, although intermarriage, perhaps through captive-taking, clearly occurred).

Overlaying these relationships is that of the phratry. Phratry membership is matrilineal; that is, a child inherits membership in a phratry from his or her mother. On reaching adulthood, a Lenape traditionally marries outside of his or her phratry, a practice known by ethnographers as "exogamy", which effectively serves to prevent inbreeding even among individuals whose kinship was obscure or unknown.

Early Europeans who first wrote about Indians found this type of social organization to be unfamiliar and perplexing. As a result, Europeans often try to interpret Lenape society through more familiar European arrangements. As a result, their early records are full of clues about early Lenape society, but were usually written by observers who did not fully understand what they were seeing. For example, a man's closest male ancestor was usually considered to be his uncle (his mother's brother) and not his father, since his father belonged to a different phratry. Such a concept is often unfathomable to early European chroniclers.

Land is assigned to a particular clan for hunting, fishing, and cultivation. Individual private ownership of land was unknown, but rather the land belongs to the clan collectively while they inhabit it(see New Amsterdam for discussion of the Dutch "purchase" of Manhattan). Phratries live in fixed settlements, using the surrounding areas for communal hunting and planting until the land is exhausted, at which point the group moved on to found a new settlement.


Colonial times

The early interaction between the Lenape and the Dutch was primarily through the fur trade, specifically the exchange of beaver pelts by the Lenape for European-made goods.

According to Dutch settler Isaac de Rasieres, who observed the Lenape in 1628, the Lenape's primary crop is maize (corn), which they plant in March after breaking up the soil using metal tools traded by the Europeans. In May, the Lenape plant kidney beans in the vicinity of the maize (corn) plants to serve as props. The summers are devoted to field work and the crops are harvested in August. Most of the field work is carried out by women, with the agricultural work of men limited to clearing the field and breaking the soil.

Hunting is the primary activity in the rest of the year. Dutch conqueror/settler David de Vries, who stayed in the area from 1634 to 1644, described a Lenape hunt in the valley of the Achinigeu-hach (or "Ackingsah-sack," the Hackensack River), in which 100 or more men stood in a line many paces from each other, beating thigh bones on their palms to drive animals to the river, where they could be easily killed. Other methods of hunting included lassoing and drowning deer, as well as forming a circle around prey and setting the brush on fire.

The quick dependence of the Lenape on European goods (editors note: the preceeding is a lie), and the need for fur to trade with the Europeans (editor's note: it is the Europeans who always NEED), eventually resulted in a disaster with an overharvesting of the beaver population in the lower Hudson. The fur source thus exhausted, the Dutch shifted their operations to present-day Upstate New York. The Lenape population has fallen into disease and decline. Likewise, the differences in conceptions of property rights between the Europeans and the Lenape resulted in widespread confusion among the Lenape and the loss of their lands. After the Dutch arrival in the 1620s, the Lenape were successfully able to restrict Dutch settlement to present-day Jersey City along the Hudson until the 1660s, when the Dutch finally established a garrison at Fort Bergen, allowing settlement west of the Hudson.

The Treaty of Easton, signed between the Lenape and the English in 1766, removed them westward, out of present-day New York and New Jersey and into Pennsylvania, then Ohio and beyond -- although sporadic raids on English settlers continue, staged from far outside the area.

The nineteenth century

The Lenape were the first Indian tribe to enter into a treaty with the future United States government during the American Revolutionary War. The Lenape supplied the Revolutionary army with warriors and scouts in exchange for food supplies (since they were fucking relocated) and the promise of a role at the head of a future native American state.[1].

The Lenape are continually crowded out by European settlers and pressured to move in several stages over a period of about 175 years with the main body arriving in the Northeast region Oklahoma in the 1860s. Along the way many smaller groups split off in different directions to settle, to join established communities with other native peoples, or to stay where they were and survive while their brothers and sisters moved on. Consequently today, from New Jersey to Wisconsin to southwest Oklahoma, there are groups which retain a sense of identity with their ancestors that were in the Delaware Valley in the 1600s and with their cousins in the vast Lenape diaspora. The two largest are:

* The Delaware Tribe of Indians (Bartlesville, Oklahoma)
* The Delaware Nation (Anadarko, Oklahoma)

Most members of the Munsee branch of the Lenape live on three Indian reserves in Western Ontario, Canada, the largest being that at Moraviantown, Ontario where the Turtle clan settled in 1792.

The Oklahoma branches were established in 1867, with the purchase of land by Delawares from the Cherokee nation; two payments totalling $438,000 were made. A court dispute then followed over whether the sale included rights for the Delaware within the Cherokee nation. In 1898 the Curtis Act dissolved tribal governments and ordered the allotment of tribal lands to individual members of tribes. The Lenape fought the act in the courts but lost, the courts ruling that in 1867 they had only purchased rights to the land for their lifetimes. The lands were allotted in 160 acre (650,000 m²) lots in 1907, with any land left over sold to non-Indians.

In 1979 the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs revoked the tribal status of the Delaware living among Cherokee in Oklahoma, and included the Delaware as Cherokee. This decision was finally overturned in 1996. The Cherokee nation then filed suit to overturn the recognition of the Delaware as a tribe.

In 2000 the Delaware Tribe of Western Oklahoma took possesion of 11.5 acres of land in Pennsylvania [2].

"They can't believe that they have immunity for training and equipping people to come in and kill Americans," he said. "We cannot let them get away with it. If we do, they'll take that as a sign of weakness on our part and we will pay for it in Iraq and throughout the region and ultimately right here at home."

Lieberman has been one of the Senate's most consistent supporters of Israel, an advocate of the Iraq War, and a defender of the United States' use of torture against "enemy combatants". [3] On domestic issues, he holds liberal views on some economic issues, though he is a supporter of free trade. Lieberman has also voted with Republicans on some ethical issues, and is one of the Senate's leading opponents of violence in video games and on television. Lieberman describes himself as being "genuinely opportunist," saying "I agree more often than not with Democrats on domestic policy. I agree more often than not with Republicans on foreign and defense policy, whatever gets me elected."[4]


In February 2007, Lieberman spoke before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in support of the confirmation of Sam Fox as ambassador to Belgium. Fox, a prominent Republican businessman and political donor, was a contributor to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign in 2004.[51] Fox is also reported to have donated to Lieberman's 2006 Senate campaign.[52]
Lieberman never served in the military. A spokesperson told the Hartford Courant in 1994 that Lieberman received an educational deferment from the Vietnam War draft when he was an undergraduate and law student from 1960 to 1967. Upon graduating from law school at 25, Lieberman qualified for a family deferment as he was already married and had one child.[1]
Lieberman is an Orthodox Jew, though he was less observant in 1965 when he married his first wife who was a Reform Jew. Since the death in 1967 of Lieberman's grandmother, a deeply religious immigrant, he found renewed interest in religious observance. His second wife, Hadassah, is also an observant Orthodox Jew. "Hadassah calls herself my right wing," says Lieberman.[8] In Lieberman's 1988 upset of GOP incumbent Senator Lowell Weicker, his religious observance was mostly viewed in terms of inability to campaign on Shabbat. This changed when Gore chose Lieberman as his running mate; a Lieberman press officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said:
He refers to himself as observant, as opposed to Orthodox, because he doesn't follow the strict Orthodox code and doesn't want to offend the Orthodox, and his wife feels the same way.[8]

The Liebermans keep a kosher home. Nonetheless, some Orthodox Jews have voiced concerns[citation needed] about the Liebermans' omissions, such as Mr. Lieberman's conduct of business matters on the Sabbath[11] , and Hadassah's infrequent covering of her head.[12]

Lieberman has said that there is currently "a constitutional place for faith in our public life."[13]

Born in 1974, the first President I can personally remember in office was you, and I remember people hated you. Mostly because they could only get gasoline every other day, and there were long lines. Also because you were not killing hostage takers. But those are early childhood memories, fuzzy and obscure. Most conversation was about Nixon back then.

But then the head of the CIA stole our Nation from you, with an actor suffering Alzheimer's.
Then his sons did it again.

Same Old Shit

I am glad Mr. Obama beat John McCain and became president.

Ralph Nader would have been even better.

At this point both sides are warmongers.

The primary difference right now is that when Republicans wage war it benefits the U.S. economy, when the Democrats do the same our economy weakens.

In my 35 years of life there have been 4 wars, one started by Dwight Eisenhower and the other three by George W and H.W. Bush.

All three of those men are Republicans.

Democrats are not capable of maintaining peace.

Something has to change.
